Jeff Cup '09 PreRace

Sunday, the queen of the Virginia classics, the JEFF Cup. I am excited for the race on Sunday. This is a race I have been training for since December. My goal is to race better than last year. I can't rely on a result, as there are way too many variables in a race like this.

Last year I came into the race in decent shape, with a lot of base miles, and some intensity. My race went fine until the last couple of miles, when my legs quit with cramps. I am not sure if it was from exhaustion or nutrition, but I am taking precautions this year.

This race has been a great catalyst for the beginning of the race season for me. In Janurary I started a much better nurtition plan, and I have dropped 24 lbs. I say nutrition plan, and not diet, because I plan to eat like this for a long while. I feel better, and have more energy. Also, I have been neglecting core strength over the years. As with most cyclists, we spend all of our time on the legs, and forget what the legs push againist. Through Cylco-club, I have been doing yoga and core routines 3-4 days a week. We will see if it tranlates to more power on the hills.

My goals for the race are to ride near the front, and safely as possible. Suffer less in the hills. If I have some left for the sprint, maybe a result. I only have one teammate, and the 123 other dudes that make this their biggest race as well. The Cat 4 rodeo is on.

See ya Sunday!

Dismal Dash '09

weather was not ideal. Rain and 45 degree temps, but the wind was light. This was the first year I did not race, and I enjoyed volunteering. I would have enjoyed standing at the intersection if I was working on my tan, instead of holding an umbrella. I did enjoy quizzing the nice police officer that stood with me at the intersection. I learned a lot about life as a cop, and she was telling me stories about car chases, and drawing down on some perps.

I would like to send out a big thanks to everyone who volunteered, and raced on a day where sitting on the couch would have been ideal. Also, thanks to Kim O'Brien, our team mom, for putting together all of the organization for the race.

Well the Dismal Dash lived up to it's name again. The
Here are some pics I took while sweeping the course:

Snowball Crit #1 '09

It is that time of year again ROADIE RACING. Today felt more like a CX race, than a road race. The temps were in the 40's and there was scattered COLD rain.

My goals for the day were to get some race paced intervals, maybe a good sprint at the end, and have fun. Well he rain made the fun part a bit difficult.

Race recap: 3/4 B race

I was messing around with my jacket, and getting ready for the start, and everyone else was lining up. I had to start at the back, which made the beginning of the race harder than it needed to be.

The race began quickly with guys off the front immediately. We had the pace pegged for the first 7-8 laps. I had to close a couple of gaps to stay on, but my legs had the power to do it. One guy got way off the front, and could not be caught. The rest of the race I held my position. Halfway through is when it became unfun. I was starting to get cold, everything was wet. Around the corners, I would always find someone's back tire spray sand blasting my face.

On the last lap I tried to move up, and still had some power in my legs. It got too squierrly for me and I backed off a tad. I may have finished in the top 15.

All in all it was a good early season race for me . In the last five weeks I have dropped 15 lbs, and plan to be a mountain goat for the jeff cup.

Cold Plex

I headed out to the Va Beach Sportsplex for the CX winter endurance challenge. The weather didn't disappoint on the winter part. The race setup was fantastic. There was a live band (at times), a heated reg. tent, and a very nice course. I want to send out a big thanks to everyone involved in putting together such a great event.

I raced the B race. I was not expecting much, and I didn't disappoint. I had a flat before the race that killed my warm up. Then I fell on the first lap on the off camber section. My tires were overinflated. The rest of the race I chased Josh, and did not make up much ground. It was a good training day.

My training has been spotty lately, and I am not in shape. I finally feel motivated, and I am going to put in a big training surge to get ready for this spring. With a baby due at the end of April, I have to get my racing in early.

Richmond CX Weekend, Part 1 (Chimbo)

Albe Sure and I rolled up to the Richmond weekend of cross. We had good times racing on two great courses. The weather was beautiful, and the pain was sweet.

Let me break it down:

Saturday: (Chimbo) This is one of the best spectator courses that we have in the VA. You can see the whole course from on top of the hill. The course was much different from last year, and I enjoyed this course better. They did add a larger run up, which killed me every lap.

The race - I got a bad start, and could not have held the front group pace. I felt like I was going to puke everytime up the stairs. I need to lighten up this robost frame I have, as gravity is killing on these run ups. I finished near the back, and pretty much sucked, but I had fun.

Time to Dust Off the Blogging Skills

I have been severly slacking on the blog posts this summer. With Cyclocross starting and some other cool fall time activities, look for some regular posts in the near future.
